Elephant grass typically grows wild in acidic and saline waterlogged areas. The lower part of the grass stem is hard and about 8-10mm in diameter, embedded horizontally in the mud.

The inflorescence is located at the top of the stem, about 1.5-2cm long and 1cm wide. To complete a basic grass straw, several steps are involved, starting with harvesting the elephant grass from the field, followed by washing it with ash water and cutting it into 18-20cm segments. An iron rod is then used to remove the pith inside. The final step is to wash the straw again and soak it in powdered seashell to reduce bacteria before drying it in the sun.
After being thoroughly cleaned, the grass straws are bundled and wrapped in banana leaves. There are two types of straws: fresh grass straws and dried grass straws. Fresh straws can be stored for two weeks in the refrigerator or one week at room temperature. Dried straws are sun-dried for 2-3 days and then oven-dried. Dried grass straws can be stored for six months at room temperature and can be reused multiple times.
